Oodgeroo Noonuccal formerly Kath Walker was born on North Stradbroke Island, in Queensland. The Aboriginal Charter of Rights, was first presented in 1962, and still today remains  one of Walker’s best known  poems. Walker successfully campaigned for full citizen-ship for Aboriginal people and the removal of all anti-Aboriginal sections of the Constitution.

In 1970, for services to the community, she was awarded an MBE (Member of the British Empire). However, in 1987 she returned the MBE and changed her name to Oodgeroo (of the tribe) Noonuccal, in response to continued injustices against her people.
Oodgeroo Noonuccal received honorary doctorates and several literary awards in recognition of her  achievements. Her poetry evoked the dispossession of the Aboriginal people and their plight.

Oodgeroo Noonuccal  believed young people were the hope of the future and generously opened up her home on Stradbroke Island as a cultural and environmental education centre, welcoming visits by thousands of children of every race and creed.
